National Sugarcane Alliance of Farmers interim chairman Saulo Busolo says the farmers took that step after the ministry of agriculture failed to include their representative in the taskforce that was set up to look into matters ailing the sector.
Busolo says the taskforce being headed by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparaya and co-chaired by Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o will not address concerns of farmers since most of the taskforce officials are government officials.
He announced that the Alliance will unveil the taskforce team next week drawn from the sugar belt region to collect views of framers.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu, Busolo says the farmers’ taskforce will compliment the ministry of agriculture taskforce.
He noted that views of the farmers in regard to finding solutions to challenges bedeviling the sugarcane industry must also be put into consideration.
Busolo says farmers are the most aggrieved parties in the sector and it was not prudent to form a taskforce without getting their input.
Charles Atyang who represents farmers from Nyando sugar belt noted that the ministry of agriculture has made it clear that no farmer representative can be in that taskforce.
Atyang told farmers not attend meetings being organized by the national taskforce but wait for the formation of their own taskforce.
