Clamour for land.

Residents of Kanyakwar in Kisumu yesterday battled officers who had escorted contractors to erect a perimeter wall in a disputed land.

The locals declined to leave the contractors to perform their duty as they insisted that the land belongs to them.

A resident Rosemary Adhiambo said the community had been undergoing challenges to settle in their land.

Adhiambo said Kanyakwar elders were pushed out of the land in the early 1960s without compensation and now their offspring want back their land.

She called upon politicians to come clean on the land dispute in the area noting that most of them were involved in grabbing the land.

Speaking to press at the disputed land after chasing away the officers, Adhiambo asked Raila Odinga to come out and help the community.

She said Raila should not just keep quiet when the people of Kanyakwar faced evictions and harassments from the police.

Another resident Robert Osure said the community had been facing resistance whenever their loved ones dies and could not afford to befit them farewell in a dignified manner.

Osure said politicians had abandoned its people who were unable to settle in peace and enjoy their lifetime.
