Two traffic police officers in Kisumu are admitted in hospital following a sting operation mounted by officers from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC).
One female officer sustained gunshot wound on her thigh while a male officer broke his leg while fleeing from the officers along Kisumu-Kakemega road next to Mamboleo junction.
In a joint press briefing, Nyanza regional police boss Vincent Makokha confirmed that a sting operation was conducted in two major roads leading outside the lake side city.
Makokha confirmed that there was an arrest of some five police officers in different locations in Kisumu.
The arrests were made at Mamboleo junction and the other one towards Airport road after gun shots rented the air.
Two officers were arrested next to the Kisumu airport along Kisumu Busia road while three officers were arrested at Mamboleo junction.
Makokha says police is in support of the fight against corruption while allaying fears that there is bad blood between the police and EACC.
The police boss further announced that ballistics examination of all the guns at the scene of operation along Kisumu Kakamega road is on.
The injured officers according to Makokha are responding well to treatment.
EACC deputy head Western region Aura Chibole who flanked the police boss during the briefing says the sting operation was mounted following complaints from motorists.
However, Chibole says the officers were arrested with no money since the complaint was about rampant collection of money from motorists plying those routes.
He says the officers dropped the money as they were fleeing and members of the public took the money.
He says the officers have been processed and will be released on police bond to allow them to appear before court at a later date.
