Kenyans living in Migingo Island want the Kenyan government to come clean on the fate of Migingo Island saying that allowing Ugandan government to deploy its People Defense forces (UPDF) to the island is an indication that the island is under the jurisdiction of the Ugandan government.
The Kenyans who have expressed fear over more possible abuses in island want the Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta to have bilateral talks with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Mseveni so that the army officers can be withdrawn from the Island.
Campaign against Abuses at Migingo island coordinator Dr.Dan Alila said Kenyan civilians and police officers are likely to be subject to more serious abuses by the Ugandan army officers deployed in the island early this week accusing the Kenyan government of being passive on the matters of Migingo Island.
Dr.Alila said both Kenyan civilians and police officers living in the island have previously been abused unfortunately the Kenyan government has always remained mum.
He also questioned the silence of human right organizations in Kenya over Migingo urging them to come out and defend Kenyans at the island from abuses.
In a previous interview this week Migori county police commander Mr.David Kirui insisted that the change of guard by Ugandan government is a normal occurrence which should not raise any fear.
Kenyans living in the embattled Migingo Island say hat they have been subjected to beatings, fishing gears seized and even forced to pay taxes to the Ugandan government.
To establish whether the Ugandan security deployed were normal police officers or Ugandan People Defense forces ,Mr.Kirui said he is not aware saying that its not easy to tell.
However a Ugandan government owned newspaper known as the Vision on 3rd February 2017 had on its front page a story about the deployment of Ugandan defense forces to Migingo Island.
