A multi agency team is coordinating assistance to flood victims in Kisumu County as three people have so far been confirmed to have died as a result of the floods.
Ruth Odinga Senior Advisor to Governor Anyang Nyong’o says those who died were crossing a makeshift bridge in Seme Sub County.
All the bodies have been retrieved from the river.
Addressing the press in Kisumu, Odinga says 18 evacuation centers are in place across the county to help accommodate those who have been displaced from their homes.
She says the county is coordinating with other agencies like UNICEF, Red Cross, Plan International and the National Government in mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims.
She says the County Government is still carrying out some interventions that include desiltation of river months to allow flood water to drain into Lake Victoria.
She called upon locals who are living in flood prone areas to move to the evacuation centres where coordination in terms of supplies will be done.
Those so far in the evacuation centres spread across the county are numbering over 400 people with Odinga saying that close to 700 more families are integrated into relatives’ homes.
Most of the families who are hard hit with flood water are in Nyando Sub County with close to 300 families affected.
A local chief in Ombaka area in Nyando Jacob Ong’udi confirmed that majority of the victims are camping at Nyamasao evacuation centre.
Ong’udi says there is need for food and non food items to help the victims.
Jane Juma, who is in the evacuation centre, says her house is marooned in water forcing her to seek for help in the centre.
