A section of Borana community leaders from both Isiolo and Marsabit Counties have made scathing attacks on Hassan Wario’s performance as a Cabinet Secretary (CS) in charge of Sports, Culture and Arts and asked President Kenyatta to replace him with another qualified person from the region when he unveils members of his cabinet to serve in his second term.
Speaking during a press conference in Isiolo, the leaders led by the Isiolo Civil Society organization’s pointman Daudi Tari Abkula and former County Council Chairman Hussein Abduba hit out at some Borana community leaders who had earlier come out in support of CS Wario’s reinstatement, accusing them of misleading the public on the CS’s performance. The other section was led by the chairman of the Nasulu Community Conservancy, Omar Godana Dida.
This new development could impact negatively on CS Wario’s quest for a second term as a Cabinet secretary, bearing in mind that he hails from the same community that is now divided regarding his reappointment.
Tari accused the CS of playing a major role in the Rio scandal that hugely affected Kenyan athletes during the Olympic games, adding that Dr. Wario had ashamed the entire nation and the pastoralist region that he was appointed to represent. He further accused the CS of failing to involve himself in any development projects in the region and also failing to sell government policies to locals in the two Counties.
He called upon the president to choose another community representative from the people he has been working with, a personality that will have a positive impact on both the national and local platform, adding that there was no need to point out names of people who merit the appointment as the president already knows a few of them.
Tari reiterated that apart from the Cabinet Secretary position, the Borana community was also lobbying for other positions such as principal secretaries, high commissioners, heads of parastatals and board directors, arguing that the people of Marsabit voted jubilee 88% while Isiolo people have supported the government side since independence.
Abduba also said that as local leaders, they had not seen any positives from Dr. Wario’s five year stint as a cabinet secretary that would entice the president to reinstate him.
He cited the recent withdrawal of sports’ sponsorship by some betting companies as due to poor management of the sports docket.
