Corona virus takes toll on businesses

By JOSEPH OJWANG, Kisumu County.

Boat riders in Dunga beach at the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu are reeling from the effects of COVID19 that has threatened a lock down in the country.

The riders were seen lazing around by the lake with nothing to do as corona virus fear takes toll on Kenyans.

Daniel Opiyo, a rider, says corona virus scare has kept off visitors from the lake leaving them jobless.

Opiyo says majority of young men were self employed in the lake, by taking visitors mainly tourists and school going children for a ride to view the ambience of the lake.

Close to over 20 boats docked at the shores of the lake an indication that there is no business taking place.

Opiyo says Dunga always comes to life as early as 8 am but for the last two weeks the situation has been different.

Donald Otieno lamented that their source of income has now been shut with the closing of the schools.

Otieno said they will adjust with time as they venture into other income generating activities as they wait for the virus escalation to subside.

He said they have taken heed of the ministry of health advice to have sanitizers at their work places.

Samuel Okoth, appealed to the government to make more effort to combat the disease from spreading.

Okoth said health officials must set up sensitization in the residential areas over the disease.
